Anzio’s history however, stretches right back to ancient Roman times when it was known as Antium, and was in fact the birthplace of the infamous Emperor Nero, the ruins of whose Villa here offer yet another temptation for history buffs.

The town of Anzio is of course, historical in its own right, not least because of the famous landing of Allied forces here in January 1944. The battle of Anzio lasted four months and was depicted on the silver screen in the inevitably titled movie, Anzio, in 1968. Allied forces would eventually reach Rome and liberate the capital from German occupation, but not before at least 3000 American and Commonwealth soldiers had died as well as countless local civilians.

Of particular interest is the Anzio War Cemetery and Beach Head Cemetery, containing the graves of thousands of soldiers, as well as the Museo dello Sbarco di Anzio – otherwise known as the Anzio Beachhead Museum, not far from the railway station and the Grand Hotel dei Cesari Anzio.
